National Flag of Korea (Tae Geuk Gi)
The South Korean flag is made up of three parts: a white background, a red and blue Taeguk in the center, and four black trigrams in each corner.
- The white background represents peace and purity.
- The 4 trigrams (Gwae 괘) represent harmony and movement as a fundamental principle.
- Heaven (Geon 건), Water (Gam 감), Fire (Ri 리), Earth (Gon 곤).
- The red and blue Taeguk represents the balance of the universe: Eum and Yang.
- The red lobe is positive energy, warmth, and light; the blue lobe is negative energy, cold, and darkness.
Sam Taegeuk (삼색의태극)
The tricolor Taeguk, known as sam·tae·geuk (삼태극), adds a yellow lobe. It represents the union of heaven, earth, and humanity: humankind (yellow), earth (red), and heaven (blue).
